INTRODUCTION

This workshop aims to highlight ways to overcome the technology and policy gaps needed to accelerate the development of sustainable liquid biofuels and bio-based chemicals. Attention will be paid to the synergistic roles of CCUS and hydrogen in realizing a Net Zero Circular Economy, and to de-fossilizing hard-to-abate sectors including aviation, shipping, and bio-based chemicals. Attention will be paid to the role that the Global Biofuels Alliance can play in advancing policy best practices particularly in the Global South.

Questions to be addressed:

  • What are the innovation and technological challenges for scaling up sustainable, high-performance and cost-effective liquid biofuels for aviation and maritime?
  • What are the innovation and technological challenges for scaling up production of bio-based chemicals and materials, as well as bio-manufacturing?
  • How can CEM and MI members support de-fossilizing aviation and maritime transport?
  • How can CEM and MI members support de-fossilizing the chemicals sector?
  • What actions are needed for increased RD&D investments?
  • What joint actions can the Global Biofuels Alliance catalyse to accelerate the production and use sustainable bio-based fuels, chemicals, and materials?
